BRACEBRIDGE — A skiing accident on Thursday evening has sent a Bracebridge high school student to hospital.
The accident happened in the after-school hours at the Horseshoe Valley ski resort in Barrie, which is visited each week by a ski club from Bracebridge and Muskoka Lakes Secondary School. Though authorities at the school declined to comment, Trillium Lakelands District Secondary School Board communications manager Catherine Shedden was able to confirm the incident.
“We can confirm that there was an accident at Horseshoe Valley on the ski hill last night,” Shedden said the following morning. “It was the school ski club from BMLSS, but we don’t really know what’s happened other than he was airlifted to Barrie, and then to Toronto.”
On Facebook, friends were expressing concern for student Nic Paterson. Several comments suggested he suffered a neck injury when a snowboarder hit him.
On Friday morning, Shedden said the school board has yet to receive word on the extent of the student’s injuries or details surrounding how the incident unfolded. The school board has not yet disclosed the student’s identity.
