Tournament gives foundation great start

SOUTH RIVER – A tournament started by Dusan Nedelko went along way this weekend towards supporting a foundation in his memory.

Through donations made at the tournament and through anauction that wrapped up during it, more than $2,700 was raised at DiscStock2010 in Tom Thomson Park in South River.

This was not the first DiscStock, but the first held inmemory of Dusan Nedelko who died in an auto accident last winter. Friends andfamily are starting a foundation in his memory that will support youth inlearning outdoor/wilderness skills.

More than 80 players took part in the tournament on the18-hole disc golf course that runs along the bank of the South River.

“For me it was an incredible experience with so many mixedemotions,” said Nedelko’s mother Hanna Trafford. “It is so wonderful to see howwell and with so much respect people remember my son Dusan.”

Money was raised through donations during the tourney, a hatpassed through the crowd during Saturday night’s live entertainment and fromthe professional disc golf players who donated their prize money to thefoundation. There was also a donation of $500 from the South River Lions Club.Lions manned the concession stand during the two-day event and also donatedtheir proceeds to the foundation.

Players came to the tournament from across the province andcould clearly be seen to be having fun throughout the day with all of the holesbeing in play at once.

“There was so much activity and people were still walkingthrough the park enjoying themselves. We didn’t hear one complaint from theplayers or anybody,” said Trafford.

And it also meant a lot to have the weekend in Dusan’shonour.

“Saturday night I walked up to the number three hole and Ihad a quiet moment with Dusan…. It brought me a lot of peace to be in thebeautiful scenery and see the basket Dusan was so proud of and to hear all ofthose people in the background.”
